Make a Difference!

Coming September 2026

Native Art Supporting Hearts is a curated online auction benefiting the Sparkle Strong Foundation, a nonprofit founded at Baby Jewels’s bedside to support families living in the pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU).

This special event brings together Native artists and supporters to celebrate the power of art, culture and community care. Our founder and family are members of the Delaware Nation and Kiowa Tribe, and our inspiration, Baby Jewels, was also Chickasaw. Through this auction, we honor those roots while raising funds to support caregiver resources, CICU family initiatives and Jewels Joyboxes that celebrate milestones during a child’s cardiac journey.

The auction catalog is currently being curated and artwork will be added soon. Donations are being accepted through August 28, 2026. Artists interested in contributing are invited to submit the following information:

What’s In a Sparkle Strong Survival Kit and Sibling Kit?

What’s In a Sparkle Strong Survival Kit and Sibling Kit?

Jewels and I arrived at Children’s Medical Center Dallas on a Monday evening. Well, she arrived on a Monday afternoon after a VIP helicopter ride from Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, and I made in a few hours later via my soccer mom mobile after racing down I35 (as safely as possible, of course). We knew it was a possibility that we were transferring to Dallas, but I had no idea for how long, what we’d have as far as resources and how quickly we’d get settled. So, I packed enough for a weekend, and I planned to buy what I ended up needing after I got the lay of the land.

Was this the best plan for a public school teacher who just left her career and now had no income? Probably not. But it’s where we were.

Little did I know that Project Mom Bags would come to the rescue and help me put into focus what Sparkle Strong could be. They provided a spacious tote full of toiletries, comfort items and more that would come in handy for life in the CICU. My favorite was a claw clip that I still have because the amount of times I just needed my hair out of my face but could never find a hair tie was numerous.

We hadn’t received anything similar during our two stays at Oklahoma Children’s, and it was invaluable. I knew immediately I wanted to help families at home in the way PMB helped us. We began curating our kits with ideas from our Project Mom tote, fellow CICU families and our own experience.

What’s in a Sparkle Strong Survival Kit?

Our goal with the survival kits is to help families with the basics while they attempt to get their feet under them after what can be a harrowing admission to the CICU. In our case, Jewels was admitted for the second time during a heart clinic visit. We went from the doctor’s office right up to the CICU.

In addition, we like to add comfort and mental health items to ease the emotional transition, as well. While nothing fixes the shock and sadness of a CICU admission, we hope that these items can make the stay as comfortable as possible.

In our survival kits you’ll typically find:

Mental Health

  •  Sparkle Strong backpack – holds all the items and is practical for going to and from the hospital
  • Handwritten note – I write a personal note to each family that receives a kit, offering our help, support and any helpful tips.
  • Blank journal and pens – to keep notes, track meds or simply journal
  • A Special Needs Prompt Journal for Parents and Caregivers
  • Tip sheet – a double sided tip sheet for living in the CICU
  • Self-care cards – includes breathing techniques, self-regulation ideas and more
  • Thank you cards – We often received things, assistance and just a shoulder to lean on, and I kept a set of thank you cards to express our gratitude.
  • Coffee shop gift card – for use at the hospital gift shop; Dunkin’ in Oklahoma, Starbucks at CMC Dallas
  • Meal delivery gift card – when you’ve had enough cafeteria food

Nourishment

  • Packaged snacks – protein bars, sandwich crackers, meat sticks, etc.
  • Gum
  • Candy – some days you just need chocolate
  • Drink mixes – to boost your water
  • Reusable tumbler

We’ve been so lucky to receive donations from BUBBL’R and Chomps to fill our kits this year! If you are or know someone who’d like to make a consumable donation, please get in touch here.

Comfort

  • Fuzzy blanket – The hospital does have linens, typically, but a soft, warm blanket can do wonders for your nap.
  • Slippers – for comfort while you’re in the room
  • Phone stand – to avoid dropping your phone on your face or carpal tunnel from all the Googling

Laundry

  • Collapsible hamper – to tote to and from home or to use at the in-hospital laundry facility
  • Laundry pods
  • Dryer sheets

Toiletries

  • Dental kit – toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash
  • Lotion
  • Face wipes
  • Deodorant
  • Lip balm
  • Dry shampoo

Our friends at Monday generously donated hygiene items that we have been able to bring to families in the CICU, at Ronald McDonald House and include in survival kits. Huge thanks!

Contents will vary based on availability and bonus donations, but this is the general idea. If you’d like to send us some kit supplies, check out our wishlist here.

How about the Sparkle Strong Sibling Kit?

Glass children is the phenomenon of siblings to medically complex or special needs children feeling as though they are “looked through” due to the high needs of their brother or sister. Alicia Maples drew attention to this and stated, “We are called glass children, because our parents are so consumed with the needs of our brothers and sisters that when they look at us, they look right through us as though we’re made of glass.”

We tried as hard as possible to keep this from occurring during our time as a heart family. This was a challenge and can never be perfect, but through our village we were able to keep a bit of normalcy while we were close to home and even once we moved to Dallas. We carry this into our mission at Sparkle Strong by being part of the village and offering sibling kits.

For our siblings, we gift:

    Siblings 10+

    • Handmade pillowcase – for use at home or in the hospital, this also serves as the bag for the goodies
    • Mental health journal and pens
    • Fidget
    • Card game
    • Power bank
    • Snacks
    • Candy
    • Lip balm

    Siblings 9-

    • Handmade pillowcase – for use at home or in the hospital, this also serves as the bag for the goodies
    • Stuffed animal
    • How I Feel Journal and pens
    • Activity Set
    • LCD writing tablet
    • Cape and mask
    • Snacks

Again, contents will vary based on availability, as well as each child’s needs. If you’d like to send items for sibling kits, you can see our list here.

If you’d like to help us keep these kits going, there are a few easy ways to jump in. Our wish lists are always there for specific items, but monetary donations are welcome and help keep us flexible when needs pop up fast or change last minute. They let us restock, pivot and say yes when a family needs something we didn’t plan for but absolutely should have.

Every kit we give out is built with intention, care and the belief that families walking into a CICU room should not also have to figure out where to find the basics in the middle of everything else they’re carrying. If you are a heart family in need of a kit, please request one here.

    Holidays with Heart Silent Auction

    Holidays with Heart Silent Auction

The holidays are a time of joy and togetherness, but for many families, that season is spent in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), surrounded by monitors instead of family and friends. Some parents spend the holiday at the bedside while siblings wait at home, splitting time between two worlds.

At Sparkle Strong Foundation, we know this reality firsthand. Our mission is to bring comfort and moments of joy to families navigating CICU life through programs like Sparkle Strong Survival Kits providing comfort and practical items for caregivers and siblings and Jewels’s Joyboxes, named for our precious Jewels, boxes of milestone markers and celebration kits.

This November, we’re hosting our first Holidays with Heart Silent Auction to raise funds in support of these programs. Every item auctioned helps us provide care and encouragement to families who will be spending their holidays and beyond in the hospital.

    📅 Auction Dates: November 21–23, 2025
📍 Location: Online via Zeffy (link coming soon)

    How you can help:

    • Donate an item or experience (gift baskets, gift cards, services, products, or tickets).

When Her Sparkle Became Starlight: Child Loss in the CICU

When Her Sparkle Became Starlight: Child Loss in the CICU

    Sweet Jewels at home

This isn’t a post I ever wanted to write. But we’re going to be real, we have to hold both the joy and the heartbreak. And the truth is, sometimes the worst happens.

As I researched and embraced my new role of heart mama (because I fully and ferociously chose our Jewels knowing fully what her diagnoses held), I avoided every mention of loss, stats regarding mortality rates, resources for bereaved parents. I didn’t want a flicker of those thoughts in our space. No chance that we would think it into existence. Still, despite the endless layers of love, hope, prayers, science, confidence, medical knowledge, grit, support, willingness and wishes, sometimes a CHD journey ends in the unthinkable.

And for our precious, happy, beautiful, wonderful Jewels, it did.

    Our Fight

She was all joy and fight wrapped up in one precious, tiny body. I absolutely knew that she would pull through and beat the odds. As we spent the beginning of 2025 back in the CICU (after three beautiful months at home), as I fought with every fiber of my being to get her transfered to a new hospital, as I pushed all the decision-makers hard to see the whole picture when deciding if she would be a transplant candidate, as we beat every obstacle the hospitals, the foster system, the universe and her body put in our way, I was absolutely confident that I would walk down Main Street USA with my baby girl, new heart beating strong in her chest and huge smiles on all of our faces. We’d finally be able to exhale.

Looking back, I know now that some of that confidence was false security. It was survival. The only way to get through the days and nights at her bedside. But I wouldn’t trade those moments of believing, of picturing her future, for anything. Except maybe another chance, but we know that’s not possible.

    Remembering Our Girl

When I think of our precious Jewels now, the image that comes to mind is my favorite photo, the first one you saw on this port. Wrapped in her giraffe towel, smiling big, eyes bright and full of life and love. That’s the girl who lives in my heart. That’s the girl who will always be part of our story.

Jewels had a way of filling the room, even when she was tiny. Once she found her voice, she never stopped using it, always talking, always making herself known. After so many intubations, with one of them damaging a vocal cord, we never got to hear her voice in quite the same way again. But I still remember those early days when she’d sing back to me as I sang my 90s and early 2000s Broadway favorites. She was my littlest audience for Rent and Wicked, which was fitting since her first and only trip to the movie theater was to see Wicked.

Her smile was everything. It wasn’t just the curve of her lips, it was the way her whole face lit up, her eyes shining with the warmest joy. The feeling of Jewels smiling at you was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever known, and it’s a memory I carry everywhere but can never recreate.

    Sweet Jewels at home

She loved her little world, too. We kept her away from screens until one day in her second CICU stay, someone turned on the TV, and she discovered Bluey. From then on, the theme song was her jam. She’d whip her head toward the TV the moment those first notes played. Church Doll, a ladybug lovey named by one of her respiratory therapists, was always tucked in with her. She lit up at the sound of her Princess Tiana doll, loved squeezing and smacking her crinkly books and never got tired of her ocean drum and jingle bells.

One of my favorite hospital memories came in Dallas, when our nurse Allison aka Nurse Fart (lovingly coined by the middle kiddos, Jada and Tavi) and I bundled Jewelsy Pie into the stroller and we went on a tour of the hospital. We wandered into other units, met other kiddos, and Jewels even got to go outside, something she hadn’t done in months. When we came back, we sat outside her room with nurses and other moms, just talking while the babies listened in. It felt almost normal. Just women talking, kids nearby and life happening. One of the moments I’m most thankful for during our CICU days.

Her spirit was sassy, happy and pure. And I miss it more than I can ever say.

Jewels’s sparkle is woven into every single thing we do here at Sparkle Strong. And while her heart has stopped, her light hasn’t. It shines on in the kits we give, the Joyboxes we pack and the families we walk beside. It lives in her siblings and how they continue on with a sparkling glint in their eyes that is equal parts love, fondness and grief. And I hope it continues to live in her legacy, in the way we continue to bring joy to those navigating the spaces we’ve now left behind, in the moments of magic that fight their way through the shattering pain of her absence on Earth.

    Continuing On

At this time, it’s been two months and five days since we last breathed the same air. Since she said goodbye. Since she joined the stars. It has been the absolute hardest time of my life. My soul is broken, and it’s so hard to function every single day. But I try. Her siblings are here. Her legacy is here. Her spirit continues on, and I am trying to continue with it. I’m completely imperfect in this grief. I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t know how to live and I still have so much sadness, anger and hurt.

To the parents reading this who know this pain firsthand: It’s not fair. It’s okay to hate every bit of it. Your child didn’t deserve this ending. You didn’t, either. There are no silver linings or platitudes or prayers big enough to cover that truth.

This post is personal, raw and ours. It’s not a resource list, not a guide. Those will come as I find them because too many families in our community face this reality. But for now, this is simply me saying: I see you. I grieve with you. I understand in ways I wish I didn’t.

If you’re still here reading, thank you for holding space with us. I will keep moving forward one messy day at a time, carrying my Jewelsy Girl with me in everything I do. Every Joybox, every survival kit, every phone call to a family who needs to know they’re not alone. Her life changed mine and it will continue to change how Sparkle Strong shows up for other families.

With love for my baby girl, always.

    Love,
    Jess
